travel from Corfu to Volos

The Question:

Kalimera Stavros
Is it possible to travel from Corfu to Volos by bus in May - how long would this take and is it the cheapest option?
EfharistoDerek

The Answer:

Kalimera Derek,

From Corfu there is a bus going to Larissa, which is close to Volos. Volos is being connected with Larissa with local buses and train every 30-45 minutes. The bus Corfu-Larissa departs at 8 am every Tuesday and Friday and you will reach Larissa at 16.00. Ticket costs 41 E and in this price the ferry boat ticket is included. Larissa-Volos route is quite cheap (around 6 euros by KTEL bus and 2,5 by OSE train) and the trip lasts 1 hour. You can call at the station (0030 26610 28928) to find out more.

Always glad to help you!

Thessaloniki-Kilkis roundtrip by bus or train

The Question:

Hi Stavros,
I want to know the bus timetable from Thessa to Kilkis in the morning between 06.00 and 08.00 and from Kilkis and Thessa after 16.00 til midnight. If it is possible to give me info about train timetable for the same direction and the same hours. From where I can get the bus/train to Kilkis and which are the nearest hostels/hotels to this bus/train stations?
thanks a lot in advance!!
Ivo

The Answer:

Hello there!

By Thessa I assume you mean Thessaloniki. There are KTEL buses at 06:00, 06:30 and 07:15 am from Thessaloniki heading to Kilkis. For your way back, there are routes at 16:00, 16:45, 17:45, 19:00, 20:00 and 21:00. Ticket both ways will cost you about 8-9 euros. Call at the KTEL station to find out more about the address on 0030 2310 595408.
By OSE trains it will cost you less, about half the price. The respective routes are at 06:05 and 07:20 am from Thessaloniki and at 17:10, 20:55 and 22:40 from Kilkis. Automized call center of OSE can be reached by calling at 1110. It is really helpful!
The trip lasts about 30 minutes.
About the hotels I cannot propose you some, but I am sure you will have no problems finding one near the station each way you select (by KTEL bus or OSE train). They are both located in the centre of the town.

Always happy to help you :)

Thessaloniki Volos by train

The Question:

Hello again Stavros..... How much does it cost by train to Volos from Thessaloniki and how close to airport is the station and how easy is the trip.

Best regards
Chris

The Answer:

Hi Chris!
By train it is cheaper, but you change trains. The first part Thessaloniki-Larissa is being operated by Proastiakos type of new trains and the second Larissa-Volos by the OSE traditional old line. The total cost is 12,10 one way and 19,40 round trip. You can call 1110, the automated call centre of OSE trains, to find out the timetable. There are many routes for example at 09:45, 12:42, 14:10, 16.00. You will arrive in Larissa 90 minutes later and you will leave again in about 30-40 minutes. The second part of your trip lasts 50 minutes.
The train station is located in the centre of Thessaloniki, not close to the airport. But there are always busses and taxis.

Regards,

-Stavros

Travel times and cost for Thessaloniki - Volos (Pelion)

The Question:

Dear Stavros
We are planning a holiday in Milina Pelion 26 May-5 June. As there are no more Volos flights from London UK we must choose between flying to Skiathos or Thessaloniki. Could you please advise us about travel times & prices from Thessaloniki airport by bus &/or train.I know that from Skiathos we can take a bus to the port & a taxi-boat to Platanias -probably easier but the flight to Skiathos is more expensive! Having all this information will help us decide.
Many thanks!

The Answer:

Hello there,

The part about Skiathos connection with Volos-Platanias is correct.
From what I have searched of Thessaloniki - Volos by KTEL bus lasts 2,5 hours and the ticket costs 16.60 Euros. The timetable for the time being is as per below:
07.00 , 09.00, 11.00, 13.00, 15.15, 17.00, 21.15, 23.00 h.
I advice you to cross - check it a few days before arrival for potential small changes (tel. 0030 2310 595408). From Volos there are frequent local busses towards Pelion area, so you won't have problems.

By train it is cheaper but you change trains at Larissa. The price is 7 E and the routes depart from Thessaloniki to Volos through Larissa at 12.42, 16.33 and 23.00. The trip lasts 3 hours and from Volos you get again the local busses. For OSE trains telephone centre just dial 1110.

Hope I helped you decide. Enjoy the beauty of Pelion!!!

The Question:

You can travel by KTEL buses though. The trip will last 7-8 hours and you can call at 0030 2310 500111 to find out timetables and availability.

Hope I helped you!

Syros to Piraeus, Piraeus to Patras and Patras to Venice!

The Question:

Gday! StavrosWe are going to be staying on Syros Island for a couple of weeks and then need to get to Venice to catch a Costa Cruise on the 23rd May 09. Flights from Athens to Venice are complicated We thought we would try the Ferry from Syros to Piraeus (or Corinth)?? then catch a train ride through to Patra where we can catch an overnight ferry to Venice. We are not sure if the journey can be completed in one day? as the ferry to venice leaves Patra at mid night?? Can you advise us with our best options? Do you know if the Cruise liners leave Venice from the same port as the Minoan ferry?Regards Sheila

The Answer:

Hey Sheila!
Well, I think you can make it in one day if you start early and with a good planning!
Syros-Piraeus lasts 2,5 to 4 hours depending on the ferry type you will choose. The timetable is not available, as the companies publish it around March. One good site to check it out then is www.fantasticgreece.com.
Then at Piraeus you will have to take the train. There is proastiakos train line until Kiato and then OSE train until Patra. I know 2 routes for Piraeus-Parta: one at 11.44 and one other at 18:44. You can find more departing hours by calling their call centre on 1110. The personnel is quite helpful! Ah and the port from Proastiakos train platforms is close enough so you will have to calculate in advance 30 minutes to get there.
If you want to catch the midnight ferry to Venice you should plan to arrive at Patras the latest 22.45 as you need to get from the train station to the port. The distance is not far away, don't worry about it. The trip with the train from Piraeus to Patras takes 3.30-4 hours.
I am not sure about the port at Venice..why don't you check their official site at http://www.costacruise.com ? I am sure you will find a great deal of useful tips!
Hope I have helped!

From Kiato to Aigio do I change train platforms?

The Question:

Do I have to change platforms (or stations) when I get to Kiato to take the train from Kiato to Aigio?? Is the train from Kiato to Aigio only OSE or is there Intercity as well??? From past experience I know OSE are not reliable time wise. Is the train leaving Piraeus at 20.44 intercity? If yes, why do I change at Kiato and not go through to Aigio??

Helen

The Aswer:

Hi again Helen!

Well, the part Piraeus-Kiato is by the train of proastiakos and everything is ok. With the intercity proastiakos train departing on 20.44 from Piraeus you will arrive on 21.27 at Kiato. From there you just change platform (one level down at the same station) and continue with OSE train departing 21.37 towards Patras. For the time being this line is not direct, it has to stop by various villages, even if the name is intercity.
But.. I just found out by calling 1110 that the last part after Kiato is out of order - and will be this way until 19/12/08! The latest update is that the route after Kiato is being served by a bus waiting at Kiato to get all the passengers coming from Piraeus/Athens until Diakofto. From Diakofto the bus will leave you at the train station. As soon as you get on that train Aigio is 3 stops away. In less than 10 min you will be there.
If you think this is much of a trouble, why don't you try to get the KTEL bus departing from Athens Kifissos Central Bus Station and arriving at Aigio in 2 hours and 15 minutes? I know that the bus ticket is more expensive (total cost one way around 12E) but you will enjoy the confort! Find out more on +30 210 5147310.

Have fun at beautiful Aigio! Don't miss Akoli Beach ;)

From Piraeus to Aigio by train

The Question:

how to get from Piraeus to Aigio by train?

The Answer:

Hello hello!

Well it is quite easy. There is a train of Proastiakos network departing from Piraeus with final destination "Kiato". The trip from Piraeus to Kiato is about 40 minutes and you can see online the timetable. At Kiato you need to change train. There is connecting line of OSE train railways that goes from Kiato until Aigio. The trains you should catch are those that depart from Piraeus on 7:44, 11:44, 18:44, 20:44. This last one is intercity, so you will arrive faster, comparing to the others. By catching one of those trains departing from Piraeus you will have connection at Kiato as soon as you get there, so you don't have to wait at all. You simply change to train heading towards Patras and in 1 hour and 35 min you will have to get off at your stop at Aigio!
One last advice: I suggest you to call their service call centre as well (just dial 1110 and press 2 for english), as until 25/11 some itinaries have been cancelled. Just check to be sure!

Hope I helped!

May be it is better to take train to Volos, what do you think about? Could you give me telephone number to ask for timetable (bus and train) and prices?

From the KTEL station of Thessaloniki, buses depart every 2 hours to Volos and the route is approximately 2.5 hours. In case you want to learn more, the phone number is 0030 2310 500111.
